Meet the Candidate
About Shané Darby
I am the mother of three beautiful girls. Proud of my roots, I decided to raise my family around the corner from where I grew up, in a city I believe in. Motherhood paired with my passions inspired me to establish Black Mothers in Power. Black Mothers in Power is a statewide, non-profit organization founded on empowering Black Mothers by building awareness, creating educational programming and lobbying for legislation addressing racial inequity for mothers in our community.
As an active member of the Army National Guard since 2012, I serve as a paralegal. I am also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and an adjunct teacher. These affiliations have provided me with the necessary network and professional skill set to affect legislative change in our community through grassroots initiatives. I am solution-oriented and results-driven and as your current City Council Representative, I will be the connector between ALL neighborhoods in the 2nd district.
Professionally, I witness the inequality our youth face on a daily basis. As a former Child Behavioral Therapist, I worked closely with children who have experienced trauma and/or have behavioral issues throughout the city of Wilmington. My experience provided insight in the lack of community resources and youth development, as well as supplanting my passion for reinvigorating youth projects; focused on supporting local community centers and extra-curricular activities that teach our kids the necessary skills to succeed in all walks of life.
Like most of us today the need for housing reform, police reform, and protection for the working class and Wilmington’s poor families are the most pressing concerns on my mind. I realized I needed to take a more direct approach to community activism, transforming my ability as a community organizer into a tangible leadership position within my hometown. I have been motivated to run again for 2nd District because we need leadership unafraid to stand up for the most pressing issues facing our communities.
As a City Councilwoman, I advocate so that every resident of this city has access to these crucial services. At the same time, we must also ensure that everyone has affordable housing, effective public safety strategies to make our city safe, and an equitable balanced budget.
I am solution-oriented and results-driven and as your City Council Representative I will continue to be the connector between ALL neighborhoods in the 2nd District by not only speaking up for change, but continuing to influence it. However, I need your support at the polls on September 10, 2024. Together, we can bring about a positive change in our neighborhoods.
Let’s Do This!
